About us
Earth Capital Nexus was established in 2025 as a global research initiative hosted by the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment and the Global School of Sustainability at LSE.
We combine advanced geospatial and financial analytics, and environmental economics with regulatory, policy and development expertise to help rewire capital flows towards resilient, nature-positive and inclusive prosperity.
Economic growth, security and poverty alleviation depend on a resilient environment. Yet the water, soils, forests, stable climate and ecosystems that underpin our economies are being degraded at unprecedented speed – while climate change amplifies shocks to supply chains, financial stability and livelihoods. Financial, fiscal and economic frameworks remain largely blind to the value of nature as critical infrastructure – and as a foundation for health and prosperity. As a result, trillions of dollars continue to flow into nature-degrading activities, while investment in resilience and restoration falls far short of what is needed.
Our mission, therefore, is to strengthen resilience to climate change and biodiversity loss, and mobilise high-quality, accessible finance for climate adaptation, nature protection and restoration, and sustainable growth.
Our vision is a global economy in which:
- Natural capital and resilience are embedded within fiscal policy, debt sustainability analysis and macroeconomic modelling
- Prudential regulation and supervision account for nature- and climate-related systemic risk together
- Financial institutions and real-world companies integrate resilience into risk management, strategy and investment
- Emerging markets and developing economies are able to mobilise large-scale, long-term finance for climate adaptation, nature protection and restoration, and inclusive socioeconomic development.
Partnerships are key
We work hand in hand with the following partners to ensure all our outputs are relevant and actionable for practitioners.
International architecture, fiscal frameworks and standards: We work with international financial institutions such as the World Bank and IMF, standard-setters and governments to develop the analytics and policy pathways required to integrate natural capital and resilience into sovereign risk assessment, debt sustainability frameworks and global financial standards.
Financial institutions and firms: We work with banks, insurers, asset managers and global firms to embed climate and nature-related risks into credit risk analytics, transition planning, resilience-linked instruments and value chain strategy.
Country Labs: In specific countries, we conduct applied economic research with partners locally to test policy, partnership and financing models that align with inclusive growth, resilience and natural capital restoration.
